Chapter Twelve

Tanya dodged out of Devon’s reach before his lips could land. Not because she didn’t want a kiss. The problem was more that she craved one.

And he knew it, too.

Devon didn’t chase after her. Just tucked his hands behind his back, the hint of a grin on his lips.

She wagged a finger. “No more kisses.”

“Why not?”

“Because.”

“Am I a bad kisser?”

“No.” Only as she said it, did she realize that she should have lied.

“Then why won’t you kiss me? And don’t you dare use your ex as an excuse. He’s not dead. And he’s married.”

The reminder pulled her lips down. “I know. That’s not why we shouldn’t be making out.”

“Give me a good reason.”

“We’re colleagues.”

“Who work out of different offices.

“For competing companies,” she noted.

“Collaboration isn’t unheard of.”

“You’re leaving in a few days.”

“Do you want commitment?”

Her lips flattened. “No.” And at the same time, yes. She’d spent the last fifteen years alone. It would be nice to have someone to share life with.

“You’re attracted to me.”

“Yes.” Again, she just couldn’t lie. “But we can’t do anything about it. Or have you forgotten Cory’s in the other room.”

That brought a slow smile. “Cory just asked us to make a baby. I’m pretty sure that means he’s okay with me giving you a smooch.”

“Except you won’t stop at a kiss,” she huffed. The other problem was she wouldn’t try to stop him either. She wanted that and more.

“Can I help it if you turn me on?” Said with a shrug.

“You need to focus on our case. I found out some interesting stuff while you were out shopping.” She sat cross-legged on her bed, yanking the computer into her lap. A chastity belt of sorts.

Making himself at home, he sprawled alongside her. “Hit me.”

“I did,” she teased. “So, turns out that Marcel guy we’re interested in has a bit of a rap sheet.”

“How did Mason miss it?”

“Because it happened when he was a juvenile, so the records are sealed.”

“Not to you.”

She smirked. “I have my ways.”

“What was he charged with?”

“Mostly death threats and assault.”

“Big surprise.”

“Nothing severe enough to serve jail time, but lots of probation, a few stints in juvie, and plea deals for community service.”

“So not a nice boy. But is the man still a thug?”

“Probably, but he hasn’t done anything that’s gotten him arrested.”

“Who’s he work for?”

“That was a tougher nut to crack,” she admitted. “Turns out, he’s employed by a security firm.”

“Bodyguard for hire?”

“Apparently. So, I hacked their company records.”

“Not a very good security firm,” he noted.

She couldn’t help but look pleased as she said, “Their protection was good. Just not as good as me.”

“What did you discover, oh hacker extraordinaire?”

“That this company only does full-time work a for a few people. One of them is Madam Gisele Boucher, a high-end jewelry designer with a shop in Montreal. A Frederick Agneaux, who is a government official. And a Jean-Guy Lapierre, who is registered as an import-export kind of guy.”

Devon scrubbed at his jaw, showing signs of bristle. “So, in the interest of sharing info, I guess I should mention that Antoine is Marcel’s roommate.
